The state of Iowa in the American Midwest holds the first nominating contest to select presidential candidates representing the Democratic and Republican parties in the United States. Iowa is renowned for its “retail politics,” where candidates meet with ordinary citizens in rural communities and urban neighborhoods, testing their messages and honing their campaign organizations. The results of the “Iowa caucuses” (as they are called) often indicate who will mount credible campaigns for the presidency.

A huge field of candidates from the Democratic side will crisscross the state in the weeks before the caucuses on February 3, 2020. If a Republican wants to unseat Trump, he will have to show well in Iowa. Before the campaigns become national media battles, Iowans will get up-close and personal with the candidates. This is a once in a four-year chance for students from outside the US to see local and national politics intersect in America. For more information, please have a look at the brochure!
